I went back and forth from liking to disliking Edgar. When he was a child, I tended to sympathize with him simply because Catherine was so cruel to him. As he got older the pity factor started to disappear. My pity switched momentarily to Heathcliff when Catherine married Edgar simply for status. Edgar seemed to have gotten the better end of that deal. Edgar shows components of both a strong and a weak character, but I think he is generally weak. The way he raises little Catherine is proof that he is not strong because he doesn't even mention her family members or the feuds that existed in his life prior to her birth. His physical weakness is also shown near his death when his own daughter must take care of him. His strength is shown mostly in his marriage with big Catherine. She was a fairly difficult woman to deal with in general, and living with her could not have been easy, yet alone putting up with her infatuation/love of Heathcliffe.
I'd have to say that Edgar is a pretty weak character. I didn't really pity him at all, especially because he got to marry Catherine who was obviously in love with Heathcliff. I think he kind of "lucked out" when it came to the fact that he married Catherine in the first place, because it was all about status. Edgar is also weak because when faced with conflict he can't even stand up and fight like a man. Instead of fighting Heathcliff himself, he has to go get help. That shows that he's not that brave of a man, and that he is extrememly weak if he doesn't have enough guts to fight anothe man without help. In general I think Edgar does some pretty "girly" things. After his confrontation with Heathcliff he goes to Catherine and demands that she chooses between himself and Heathcliff. I don't know about you, but that sounds pretty girly to me. Overall I think that he's a pretty big whiner. He doesn't take care of his daughter, can't stand up to other men, and argues with his sister just because she married Heathcliff. (that's pretty ridiculous) He did have some tough circumstances every once in while, but generally he's a pretty weak guy in more ways than one.
