Vanity Fair Question #1

Thackeray's subtitle for Vanity Fair is "A Novel Without a Hero." How appropriate is this as a title for the novel? Explain.

This novel has been compared to a modern day soap opera and I agree with that comparison. In soap operas there is usually no hero. Everyone ends up cheating on everyone or everyone ends up involved in everyone elses business and I believe the same is true of this novel. Everyone in Vanity Fair is either trying to get money in some way or they are doing illegal things. No one in the novel really has any form of leadership or courage and no one has a "heroic" character trait. None of the characters are really moral enough to be called a hero. Becky would marry a guy just for his money and Osborne gambles away the money that he has. I think that Thakeray's subtitle is correct.
