Return of the Native Question #2

What impact do you think that Clym's previous life in the big cities of Paris and London has on his view of Egdon Heath and his return to it?

In his travels, Clym got rid of the itch to see the world. He spent time galavanting about and when he returned, he was thankful for the quiet and peace the heath provides. Unlike Eustacia, he has no problem living in the heath and even working as a common furze-cutter. His time in the big cities of Paris and London was like a vacation, and he is glad to return home to Egdon.

Clym was always treated special as a child and was privledged enough to get an education and job in Paris. Once he got to Paris he realized that this wasn't what he wanted. He wasn't cut out for the big city and all the noise. This greatly affected him, he no longer wanted to make himself richer, but he wanted to enrich the minds of others. The rest of his life he devoted to teaching others. If it hadn't been for his vision loss he would have opened up a school. Eustacia didn't get to experience all that Clym did and is unable to understand why he would want to stay in the bland country.

Marianne and Megan,

What universal truth can be drawn from your observations of what Clym learns from his experience?
