Vanity Fair Question #8

Trace all of the factors that influence our feelings about Dobbin throughout the novel. Do we experience peaks and valleys with him as we do with Becky, and do we feel that he gets what he deserves at the novel's close? Does Amelia get what she deserves?

I think that of the main characters Dobbin is my favorite. I feel that it is easy to relate to him because a lot of people are door-mats and that is what Dobbin is, a door-mat. In the beginning of the book Dobbin is kind of a nerdy kid who is bullied and when he fights back and wins I think that this is defidently a peak. Then he kind of fades out of the picture and then we see that he is madly in love with Amelia. He spends so many years of his life pining over Amelia and it actually gets kind of annoying. He acts like that guy who you never want to be around because they are always bringing you down talking about their girlfriends and all of their troubles. Even through all of that though I don't think that he really gets what he deserves. I think that he deserves someone much better than Amelia. I think that he made up an image of Amelia and then was let down when he discovered that it wasn't all that it was cracked up to be. I think that Amelia gets what she deserves. She needed to be woken up to the fact that she isn't always going to have a great life served to her on a silver-platter. Not everyone is going to love her without getting anything back and that is exactly what happens with Dobbin until he finally realizes what he had been doing.
