I think that Becky is a little harsh at times but I think that it is all a result of the hard life that she had growing up. She went to a boarding school and was highly disrespected because of her status is society. Miss Pinkerton ridicules her and gives her jobs that pay almost nothing. She has to teach French to "earn her keep" and Miss Pinkerton insults her by asking her to teach piano lessons for free. When Becky and Amelia leave, Amelia gets the signed copy of the Dictionary, but Becky recieves nothing. She is treated as a lower class citizen and I think that this really hardens her heart. As a result she is willing to do anything to get her way. She manipulates men and treats them how she thinks they want to be treated. I think that in todays world she would get along fine because now-a-days you kind of have to harden your heart in order to keep from getting hurt. I also think that she would do ok with men as well because today women who are considered "gold diggers" still get the men. Becky is a "gold digger" to an extent and I think that it works pretty well for her. If George had not of ruined her chances with Joseph she would probably have been a very well off women. I think that in the long run Becky is just trying to get by in society and make it so that she can live comfortably and I do not think that is really that bad.
