Darnay differs from his uncle the Marquis in a couple of ways. While the Marquis is aristocratic and rather stuck up Darnay opposes such values and is very honorable. Darnay has the characteristics that would make him a hero while the Marquis is seen as someone the reader will hate because he greatly dislikes the common man and even runs down a poor child with his carriage. Darnay does not like the way that the Evremonde's treat the commmon people so he denounces his name and leaves his uncle.
I think Charles experienced the common people and realized they were equal to the aristocracy. That set him apart from his uncle. Evremond is an insensitive, haughty aristocrat and has little honor beyond his title. Darnay proves honorable and virtuous simply by denouncing the French aristocracy and their ways. Another characteristic of Darnay is courage, when he comes back to Paris in hope of saving Gabelle.
Charles Darnay is different from his uncle Marquis because Charles takes pride in honesty and courage while his uncle takes pleasure in oppressing the poor and gaining wealth by any means neccessary. Charles says that he wants to leave the family because "there is not a face I can look at, in all this country round about us, which looks at me with any deference on it but dark deference of fear and slavery." Then to show the vast difference in character between nephew and uncle, Marquis responds by saying "A compliment to the grandeur of the family"(127). Darnay developed differently from his uncle and father because his life was almost taken from him during his first trial and he was able to expereince what life was like for the common man. He was able understand that there are things in life that are greater than wealth and power.
