Two themes I am going to talk about from the novel are the need for love and the theme of common sense vs. book knowledge. The novel is a tragic story of how when a person needs to be loved, they will try as hard as they can to find it. Maggie always looked up to Tom and simply wanted his approval and support. This longing for Tom's love is what kept them together until they both died. As for the second theme, common sense vs. book knowledge, this is also present with the example of Tom and Maggie. In the early chapters there is a lot of mention of how Maggie was such a smart little girl and she could read. On the other hand, Tom knew a lot about the land and things that were useful to him. It is apparent in the novel that the author is trying to make the point that quality education is very important.
