I think that I would consider Mr. Tulliver a tragic character. I'm not so sure about the tragic hero part though. I consider him a tragic character because he had a tought life. He was not educated very much, so he had to try and make a living off of the mill. Eventually things got bad with that as well and he lost the only thing he knew how to do. He becomes bankrupt AND ill, two things one would not wish upon themself, much less at the same time. Mr. Tulliver was simply trying to make a good life for his family and to prove to people that he could make it. He wanted to give Tom a good education so that he could have an easier and better life than Mr. Tulliver did. He always sympathized with Maggie, even when no one else would. He eventually died, trying to get back his life. I think that all of this makes him a tragic character.
