Mill on the Floss Question #7

How is the novel a reflection of the time (Victorian Age) in which it was written?

The novel is a reflection of the Victorian Age it was written for many reasons. One main way the novel reflects the Victorian Age is by the economic reference in it. Throughout the novel there is a lot of mention about how the economy is shifting from farming to trading. This is shown a lot through Mrs. Tulliver's sisters and their growing success. Mr. Tulliver is more traditional and is a famer. On the other hand, Mrs. Tulliver's sisters are gaining profit from the new kind of businesses. One of the points in the novel is that fortunes are won and then gone in a flash. This also reflects the Victorian Age. The people in the novel are also more free with their choices. People are starting to break out of their shells and do things that previously would not have been allowed. Young people were choosing who they wanted to marry, rather than arranged marriages. All of these are examples of how the Victorian Age is reflected in the novel.
