David Copperfield Question #10

Which character most annoyed you and why? (Dora gets my vote -- or maybe Jip, her dog, who is equally annoying). Use quotations to describe what the character says or does.

♥Dora gets the award for being the most annoying character in the story. Her inability to act as an adult is her most annoying character trait. For example, when David is try to talk to her about dinner time, she acts like a child would. He is trying to “talk reasonably” and “reason”, but she is coloring on him and whining like a baby (587). She is also incapable of being a good wife, because she is horrible at housekeeping. Another annoying instance is David is trying to explain himself to her, and she keeps sticking the dog’s nose in his face (639).

This is an easy one for me. I clearly agree that Dora and her stupid dog are the most annoying characters in the novel. Just the fact that there is so much fuss made about Jip and all the things he does and eats and tears up. The fact that Dora spends more time adoring her beloved dog than he loving husband drove me nuts. When Dora and David move in together, the living space is crowded because of ”everybody tumbling over Jip's pagoda, which is much too big for the establishment.” (Ch. 43) and it repeatedly mentions the “Cookery Book” that Dora allows Jip to deface and destroy.

To me the most, maybe not annoying, so much the character i hate the most is Uriah Heep. Just the way he manipulates and ruins people is detestable. Also he just seems like the kind of person who one would hate right off the back. Plus the characteristics given to him remind me of people I know personally who just annoy the be-jesus out of me.

The character that most annoyed me was Miss Jane Murdstone. She was unnecessarily mean to David. I think it is interesting that she is dark and masculine. Dickens goes so far as to give her a unibrow. He says “a gloomy-looking lady she was; dark, like her brother, whom she greatly resembled in face and voice; and with very heavy eyebrows, nearly meeting over her large nose, as if, being disabled by the wrongs of her sex from wearing whiskers, she had carried them to that account.” I do not care for Mr. Murdstone either but she has no reason for being mean to David. He is her nephew by marriage. David observes her as metallic which shows how really hard she is. He says she had hard nails and brought hard boxes. She also takes over his house and threatens Clara Copperfield when she protests. She also suggests that when David misbehaves that he be flogged. She also antagonizes David even during his lessons and she and Mr. Murdstone arrange to have him sent away to school. The first thing she says when she sees David is “I don't like boys.”

Yes, Dora is annoying because she is childish and refuses to grow up and help David. However, I am going to say that little Em’ly was annoying because of the way that she lets Steerforth’s tricks sweep her away. I find it stupid that she doesn’t see though his manipulation, or if she does she lets it happen. I personally believe that she just didn’t know about his manipulation because of her general innocence and desire to be a fancy upper-class person. Shortly after Steerforth announces he is having his boat rechristened the “little Emily” you can already tell she is falling for him. “She withdrew her hand timidly from his arm as we stopped to speak to them and blushed as she gave it to Steerforth” (299). She is also too stupid to notice that she has been manipulated. She blames herself for everything when, really, it was mostly due to Steerforth’s manipulation. When she sends the letter to see if Ham and everyone will forgive her she says “I am kneeling down to you, begging and praying you not to be as hard on me as I deserve- as I well, well know I deserve” (541). I suppose it is somewhat responsible to take all the blame as the does there but even her family realizes that it wasn’t entirely her fault and says that they will forgive her. I find stupidity annoying.

To me, Uriah is the most annoying character. I know he’s a major character and all, but he still annoyed me like no other. One thing that really irritates me in people is when they pretend to be someone they’re not, and in it’s pretty clear in Uriah that, even though he claims, “umble,” he’s really not. He turns out to be a sly villain who, according to Agnes, “being so much between [Agnes and her father],” (482) has essentially begun to break down Agnes’s relationship with her father. That’s really not a very “umble” thing to do. My biggest problem with Uriah is that he pretends to be weak and innocent only to take advantage of others, that’s something that really annoys me. Uriah and his mother force David to tell them about Agnes and her father so they can take advantage of him, again not a very humble thing to do. A perfect example of his hypocrisy that irritates me is when he says, “learning ain’t for me.” (237) This would be fine, except we later learn he is studying law by night. So much for learning. Uriah Heeps lying, deceptive nature is something that really irritates me in people, so I guess he has to get my vote for most annoying character.

Either Uriah Heep or Mr. Murdstone are probably my least-liked characters. I suppose I dislike Uriah Heep the most, simply because he is present during more of David's life, and proves to cause greater distress. Yes, Mr. Murdstone killed David's mother in a way, but Uriah cause much turmoil at a time when it would affect David the most. Uriah uses the guise of humble modesty, saying "umble" more often than anyone should in his or her life. Copperfield notes his utter loathing and revulsion toward him: "I saw so plainly, in the stealthy exultation of his face, what I already so plainly knew; I mean that he forced his confidence upon me, expressly to make me miserable, and had set a deliberate trap for me in this very matter; that I couldn't bear it." Basically, he ruins Wickfield's life, and uses his air of humility to infiltrate others' lives and ruin them.

I absolutely abhor Mr. Murdstone. Mr. Murdstone is one of the cruelest people in the entire novel, and scars young David Copperfield for life. Mr. Murdstone “beat (David) then, as if he would have beaten me to death” (53). The vicious beatings of David and his mother would never be an experience in which David forgets. Also, Mr. Murdstone and his sister’s utter demand for totalitarian control of the brain of Clara Copperfield is sickening. Watching Clara being controlled by the evil brain trust is painful. The most devastating sign of just how bad things get is when David is leaving the house and he “looked out, and (Clara) stood at the garden-gate alone, holding her baby up in her arms for me to see. It was cold still weather; and not a hair of her head, nor a fold of her dress, was stirred, as she looked intently at me, holding up her child” (112). Mr. Murdstone just destroys Clara’s spirit. He ultimately decimates her happiness on every level possible, basically killing her. Clara Copperfield’s death can certainly be traced right back to the time she spent with Mr. Murdstone.
